Farmers federation news re CSG agreement

28 March 2014

Dear Member

First ever agreement on the right to say no to CSG

NSW Farmers along with Cotton Australia and NSW Irrigators Council have today signed an important agreement to secure additional landholder rights with two of the state’s major gas companies - AGL and Santos. The agreement represents a major win for NSW Farmers, its members, and regional communities. The agreement can be viewed here.

The agreement means that the CSG companies will respect a farmer’s right to accept or deny coal seam gas drilling operations on their land.  It also means these companies will not take farmers to arbitration in order to gain property access. It is the first of its kind and NSW Farmers are extremely optimistic about the implications this agreement will have for the future of our regional communities.

We will be pushing for other gas companies to come on board as well. All three farming groups will also continue to advocate for independent and robust science and baseline and ongoing water monitoring on the affects of CSG drilling and extraction on agricultural land.

This is a major win for rural NSW. Although some companies have in the past stated that this is how they will operate, NSW Farmers is pleased that it is now in writing, and it can pave the way for other companies to come on board.

NSW Farmers, NSWIC and Cotton Australia will continue to advocate strongly for the right to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’  to operations to be enshrined in legislation.

Landholder rights form one part of our lobbying activities on mining and CSG in NSW and we will also continue to advocate for independent and robust science and baseline and ongoing water monitoring on the affects of CSG drilling and extraction on agricultural land. This means advocating for vast improvements to the Strategic Regional Land Use Policy, including the treatment of biophysical strategic agricultural land as well as the Gateway Process.

We will also continue to advocate for a more rigorous process by which approvals are made for CSG exploration and drilling on behalf of our members.
