Swift Parrot and Regent Honeyeater Survey

It’s that time again, for the winter Swift Parrot and Regent Honeyeater Survey!

We had an excellent response from volunteers in May for the late-autumn survey, with over 200 survey forms submitted for Victoria, NSW and Queensland. To check out all of the results from this survey, see: http://birdlife.org.au/projects/woodland-birds-for-biodiversity

We are looking for volunteers to help survey Swift Parrots and Regent Honeyeaters during winter across Victoria, NSW and Queensland. The winter 2014 survey will occur on the weekend of August 2nd – 3rd. If you cannot do a survey on those dates, we are happy for people to get out a week either side of that weekend. Incidental sightings are also welcomed.

Below is a survey form. These can be printed out, filled in, and faxed (03 9347 9323) or scanned and emailed (see email addresses below) back to us. You can also fill out the form electronically (the Word version). When filling out these forms, please provide as much information as you can for us to enter into our database, but the most important thing is to get out and look for the birds!

Any spot is fine for carrying out the survey (e.g. national parks, conservation reserves, along treed creeklines, farmland, or street trees), but both species do prefer areas which contain flowering eucalypts for foraging or areas of heavy lerp and insect loads. Also, Swift Parrots are nomadic and have a wide distribution on the mainland, so we need to cover as much ground as possible!

If you wish to participate in the upcoming winter survey or report sightings of either species, please contact one of the members of BirdLife Australia's Woodland Birds for Biodiversity team:
Caroline Wilson (Victoria, Swift Parrots) caroline.wilson@birdlife.org.au
Dean Ingwersen (Victoria, Regent Honeyeaters) dean.ingwersen@birdlife.org.au
Mick Roderick (NSW & QLD, Swift Parrots) mick.roderick@birdlife.org.au
If you know the area where you’d like to carry out the survey, please let us know beforehand.
Thank-you for your time, your help is much appreciated!

Kind regards,

Caroline Wilson | Woodland Birds Project Officer
