Watershed Landcare Group - Activities

Spotlight on Landcare: Watershed Landcare Group
Watershed Landcare is a local community organisation based in the towns and surrounding villages of Rylstone, Mudgee and Gulgong. They have a diverse membership who share a common interest in repairing and improving our landscape. Members include established landholders, town and village residents, land managers, people with country retreats and local businesses. Watershed’s objective is to "provide a catalyst for the community through education, co-ordination and support towards the improvement of the socioeconomic and physical environment of our region".
Whats happening in Watershed Landcare? 
This Friday evening the group are hosting Dr Andrew Edwards from the Darwin Centre for Bushfire Research for a Fire Ecology Seminar. Starting at 630pm and going to 830pm, the evening will be held at the Straw Bale Building in the AREC (Mudgee Small Farm Field Days) site. The group are also running two Advanced Soil Skills workshops in Mudgee on the 23-24th July with guest speaker David Hardwick.

GRANTS
Farm Household Allowance. The Farm Household Allowance (FHA) provides eligible farmers and their partners who are experiencing financial hardship with assistance and support to improve their long-term financial situation. The allowance will be paid fortnightly at a rate equivalent to Newstart Allowance (or Youth Allowance for those under 22 years). A Health Care Card will be provided to recipients. Support will also be provided through a dedicated case manager to help recipients assess their situation and develop a plan for the future. Eligible farmers and their partners will be able to access up to three years of payment. This is designed to give farm families time to get back on their feet and the opportunity to take steps to improve their circumstances. For more info: daff.gov.au/assistance

ANZ Staff Foundation Closes 17th July. The ANZ Staff Foundation has distributed $3.7m in small grants to community organisations since July 1997. Grants of around $5,000 support a variety of projects from disadvantaged youth to the environment. A National Advisory Board and State Committees comprising ANZ employees decide the granting rounds each year. Rural and Remote Diversity Scholarship Program. Closes 31st July. This program is aimed at providing governance educational opportunities for women residing in rural and remote regions of Australia. The Program will award 30 scholarships to suitably qualified experienced women to undertake our highly regarded Company Directors Course; Reimbursement of accommodation and travel costs up to A$2,000; 12 months’ membership to the Australian Institute of Company Directors. To be eligible for this program an applicant must reside outside a main metropolitan city or urban area that has a population of more than 100,000 people. Caring for Ageing Rural Australians (CARA) Closes 15th August. Rural, regional and remote areas have an ageing population, just like the rest of Australia. The difference however is that often there aren't the extensive facilities necessary to care for aged residents in their local communities. Fortunately this situation is changing over time, but greater investment is required to enhance, and in some cases create, these facilities. The Caring for Ageing Rural Australians (CARA) program is a targeted small grant program, designed to support projects and activities that benefit and support older people living in small rural and remote communities. Grants of up to $10,000 are available and eligible projects and activities include those that: help redress disadvantage caused by remoteness; Enhance aged care services and facilities; Build community capacity for aged-friendly communities; Foster community development through opportunities and participation for older people; and / or Encourage positive and active ageing, community health and wellbeing, and education programs. Rural Education Australia Program - REAPing Rewards Closes 25th August. The REAPing Rewards small grant program is a national program targeting education. It supports locally-driven projects and programs that directly benefit children and youth (0-18 years) and their educators in rural and remote communities. Grants are up to $10,000. For more info:

ANZ Seeds of Renewal Closes 26th August. For the last few years, the program has focused specifically on enhancing education and employment opportunities in rural, regional and remote areas, with preference given to projects that benefit communities with a population of fewer than 15,000 people. Through the Seeds of Renewal program, ANZ commits $250,000 which is distributed through grants of up to $10,000 to community organisations for projects focused on these areas. Potentially suitable projects include: Providing certified training courses at local community centres, Developing facilities or equipment for educational purposes, Developing and implementing programs which address school attendance or expand the curriculum on offer, Supporting programs that help people to prepare for employment or return to education, Supporting programs which help people to learn new skills and knowledge & Developing micro-business or social enterprises which help to create employment. Applications are invited from not-for-profit community based organisations with an ABN or Incorporation Certificate which contribute to the development of education and employment opportunities of communities with a population of 15,000 people or fewer. DrumMUSTER Collection 25 July, 8.30am – 12pm @ Parkes Waste Depot. Local Landcare Groups in the Parkes area volunteer their time to collect clean, empty drums to be recycled. These collections save Parkes Shire Council from having to dispose of the drum in landfill or through other methods. Tree Planting & Bird Surveys in the Capertee Valley. 15-17th August. Why not join us in the beautiful Capertee Valley in August for a weekend of fresh air, spectacular scenery, and fun while making a positive contribution to the future of the Regent Honeyeater and other threatened and declining woodland birds. Tree Planting: The main planting is on Saturday 16th August 2014. However we are always looking for volunteers to help prepare the planting stock and guards on Friday 15th August and help with any possible follow up work on Sunday 17th August. Bird Surveys: On the Sunday we will be conducting our regular August Regent Honeyeater surveys and, as always, volunteers are needed to assist with these. If you are interested in taking part, please let us know. Where: Capertee Valley which is north-of Lithgow, NSW. The property on which we will be planting is on Crown Station Road, within an area in the southern part of the Valley containing important remnant White Box woodland. Food: BYO breakfasts and lunches, a Saturday evening meal is available at a cost of $31 for adults and $6 for children under 12. The evening meal, which is provided by the Glen Alice Community Association, is a great opportunity to socialise with your fellow planters, meet the locals, and support the community and is always a popular event. National Landcare Program submissions now open. The closing date for submissions is 8 August 2014. Inviting comment on: the history, effectiveness, performance and future of the National Landcare Program, including: the establishment and performance of the Natural Heritage Trust; the establishment and performance of the Caring for Our Country program; the outcomes to date and for the forward estimates period of Caring for Our Country; the implications of the 2014-15 Budget for land care programs, in particular, on contracts, scope, structure, outcomes of programs and long-term impact on natural resource management; the Government's policy rationale in relation to changes to land care programs; analysis of national, state and regional funding priorities for land care programs; how the Department of the Environment and the Department of Agriculture have, and can, work together to deliver a seamless land care program; the role of natural resource management bodies in past and future planning, delivery, reporting and outcomes; and any other related matters. Landcare NSW will be making a submission and be looking to secure a hearing. 20 Million Trees Program submissions now open. Closes 31st July. The Federal Government is seeking information from the market on how large scale biodiverse native treeplantings could be implemented in a way that best utilises industry expertise, knowledge and capacity to achieve environmental outcomes, engagement with the community and carbon abatement. Interested organisations are invited to provide information in response to the following areas: Supply Issues, Availability of suitable land, Applicable industry standards,
Capacity for industry to deliver treeplanting Australia wide, Optimising environmental and carbon abatement outcomes, Identifying and managing other significant issues that may influence delivery, Cost effective delivery considerations having regard to the above points. Instructions for submission are found at the website. Release of draft Brigalow & Nandewar report The Natural Resources Commission (NRC) has released a draft report outlining findings and recommendations to improve the management of the Brigalow and Nandewar State Conservation Areas. The NRC is accepting submissions on the draft report until 1 August 2014. Re: item in last months Grant/Info Update: Damian Giuliano Cheap Agricultural LimeOne of our Landcare Groups have made contact with these guys. They asked me to pass on this message: Please advise any other Landcare groups looking at this option to undertake their due diligence and look closely at the test results before making a decision to promote it to their farmers. Our Committee have decided to bin the offer as we believe their is some concern around the integrity product.
